We are truly given a gift, not just for the ability to work in a location where we can conduct impactful research on the frontlines of the climate crisis, but also where we can engage and interact authentically with Yup’ik people and culture. Even though we spend a short period of time in Alakanuk and the lower Yukon, it is life-changing. In an effort to share even a sliver of that experience, I will do my best to detail some of the magic we (Sasha Wagner, Maddy Miller, Alexis Slentz, Harrison Smith, and I) encountered on our last sampling trip to the Yukon River Delta.

One of the benefits of sampling during the spring freshet is that we witness the transition from winter to spring. The air temperature gradually increased. Ice-covered rivers and lakes thawed. Landfast ice slowly broke away from the shore. Bare trees started to grow leaves and buds. Moose shed their winter coats. Birds started laying their eggs. And the people of Alakanuk were excitedly moving boats into the river in preparation for spring and summer subsistence activities.

Our first day on the water was the coldest day of all, but a definite highlight of the trip. We traveled to Three Finger Lake, a site that has been of interest during previous trips but was of particular importance during this trip as it was impacted by wildfires in the summer of 2022. While our project aims always include understanding how terrestrial sources and off-channel storage impact carbon cycling within the delta, there was now an added goal of quantifying black carbon export from the nearby (and another) massive wildfire within the delta. To accomplish those goals, we sampled surface water sites in and around Three Finger Lake as well as terrestrial sources (i.e. charred plants, soils, etc.) on the burned tundra. As a bonus, Augusta Edmund (one of our local partners) gave us some homemade akutaq that made a great tundra snack!

The second day on the boat, we went out to the Bering Sea to capture a salinity gradient coming out of the Alakanuk channel. As we slowly pulled away from the riverbank in Alakanuk, Sonny Isadore (one of our boat drivers) said “It feels like Christmas morning” – describing the feeling of seeing the ocean for the first time after a long winter. When we exited the river mouth and traveled further offshore into the Bering Sea, the water was as smooth as glass, the sea faded into the sky, and the horizon blurred. Whether the feelings were like those on Christmas morning or not, there was no doubt that we were all awe-inspired. Shortly after, wind/wave conditions turned, and our time on the Bering Sea was cut short. Against all odds (i.e. nonoptimal sea conditions, lingering sea ice, and the large size of the river plume during the freshet), we were still able to sample 16 miles offshore and find a bit of saltier water along the way. Feeling accomplished, we headed back to the mouth of the Alakanuk channel to collect one last sample and return home, Sonny skillfully navigating us through fields of large logs and stumps and against the powerful freshet river current.

For our third sampling day, we decided to revisit some delta sites sampled in August 2022 along the North and Middle mouth branches. To top off the day of sampling (and late-night filtering back in Alakanuk), we all took a moment to appreciate the fiery post-midnight sunset.

On our fourth and final day of sampling, we took a quick trip upstream - where the Middle Mouth splits from the main Yukon. There was anticipation across the village about river breakup, and all conversations seemed to center on ice and who heard what from who upriver. Based on these upriver reports, Augusta and Teddy would relay timing predictions of ice breakup for Alakanuk to us. The uncertainty framing all discussions of flooding magnitudes seemed to come from a deep respect and knowledge of what the River was capable of. Still, they described the spring flooding as being almost gentle, not accompanied by the scary house-shaking winds of fall typhoons.

Theo getting the canoe ready for water sampling in the Alakanuk Slough.

Ted taking us to view the ice in Alakanuk Slough.

View of flooding around a home in the Village.

Flooding preparations were made across town. On Thursday and Friday, May 25th and 26th, we collected water samples in Alakanuk Slough, including measurements from Teddy’s canoe with his handmade paddles. Teddy had purchased the canoe about twenty years ago from a French couple in Emmonak who had traveled down the Yukon River in it. I have been daydreaming about taking a trip like this since. On Thursday, the Slough was calm and with lots of ice, which we collected to melt down for colored dissolved organic matter analysis. The Alakanuk Slough was covered bank to bank in crushed ice chunks of varying shapes, sizes, and textures and colors ranging from clear to muddy, sprinkled with large logs and some whole tree trunks. It was moving very fast. The road across from the school was breached, but there was still a constant flow of traffic: families on four-wheelers, kids with bikes, and many dogs, all with varying degrees of urgency. There were mutual hand waves with everyone encountered, which seems to always be the case when passing by someone in Alakanuk, but now it felt more like a gift of acknowledging that we are all here experiencing this momentous event together.

An old copper fuel pipe attached to the slough edge was getting swept around as if it were a twig. Boulders of ice littered the banks, being laid to rest after a long winter and journey. One man on a motorboat was already zipping around in the Alakanuk Slough. In short, he mentioned that the weather wasn’t optimal and that he “can't promise anything.”

We all quickly packed up our gear, got dressed, and loaded up on Sony’s boat toward the Bering Sea. We headed out the Alakanuk Channel with our second (safety) boat and driver, John Strongheart (whom we started working with during the early August sampling trip). Once in the Bering Sea, we were able to get to 5 ppt without issue, but then encountered a minor snag. We were unable to move in any direction (to potentially higher salinity) due to shallow waters and breakers (large waves crashing on sandbars) but hoped that a shift in tides might bring higher salinity water. So, we made use of the beautiful weather and waited. With time, we found that the tide was coming in and bringing a change in water color and salinity, which allowed us to sample at 10 and 12 ppt – THE top priority of the trip.

On the following two days, we were less fortunate with the weather conditions. We revisited the Alakanuk and Emo Channels, which we sampled in early August, and started sampling terrestrial sites that may be contributing to the organic carbon found in the Yukon River delta. We decided that grass/shrub-dominated floodplains, forested islands, and tundra sites may be most prevalent in the delta and sampled plants, soils, groundwater, and surface water across each of those landscapes. According to this book, the Yup’ik people of southwest Alaska were among the last Arctic peoples to encounter non-Natives, and as a result, Yup’ik language and many traditions have remained intact.

One of the elders whose knowledge was collected in this book was Joe Joseph, born in Alakanuk in 1922. Imagine my surprise to find him commemorated on the wall of elders in the same Tribal Council building where Maria and I are now sleeping among pictures of dozens of other elders who have passed on—a century after his birth. In my short time here, it’s already clear that respect for elders is a pillar principle and way of life. I am grateful to Augusta Edmund, head of the Tribal Council, for helping to orchestrate interviews with some elders in the community, to learning more from them, and (with their permission) to sharing their wisdom.

- Emily Raboteau

Carbon Hunting in the Yukon Delta

https://www.arcticriverscarbon.org/blog/carbon-hunting-in-the-yukon-delta

https://www.arcticriverscarbon.org/blog/carbon-hunting-in-the-yukon-delta#comments

Uncategorized

Photo Credit: Blake Clark Going out to the field in the Yukon River delta is always an experience, and after two years of being office bound during the pandemic it was a welcome sight to fly over and see the beautiful landscape. Without her help and others in the IGAP office we could not have done any of the work we set out to. Our lab space was about as good as possible and we had everything we needed to be comfortable, efficient, and content. The Alakanuk Tribal Council and Augusta Edmund were very accommodating to us throughout our stay and provided us with cooking stuff, a fridge to store food, and a warm shower and rooms to crash in. Being able to come back to a cozy home base after our long days on the water alleviated some of the stress and strain that working in this remote region can bring.

Science-wise, we did about as well as possible, visiting more stations and collecting more samples than any trip to the delta yet. The vast majority of the coast is comprised of shallow mud flats, some of which we found with the hull of the boat and the lower unit of the outboard. The weather out on the ocean was spectacular, and I am hoping some of the water surface optical measurements will be among the best we have collected in the region. Our boat captains Robert Alstrom and John Strongheart were exceptional and took us where we wanted to go in sometimes poor weather. Anne and I were lucky (you could say) to miss the first rainy day and besides the wind and cold that occurred at the change from summer to fall we couldn’t complain.

Working in and visiting Alakanuk is such a unique and rich experience. There are always the struggles with weather, travel, and logistics but working in western Alaska is all about flexibility and having a positive attitude. I know the next crew coming in September will be in good hands in Alakanuk with Anne and Alyssa leading the way.

-Blake Clark

Arriving in Nome, Alaska

https://www.arcticriverscarbon.org/blog/arriving-in-nome-alaska

https://www.arcticriverscarbon.org/blog/arriving-in-nome-alaska#comments

Uncategorized

Photos Credit: Kyle Turner, Jonathan Sherman We had a long but safe and successful trip to Nome, AK! As we landed in Nome, Scott Freeman picked us up from the airport, and the team loaded all of our supplies and instruments and headed to the ADF&G (Alaska Department of Fish and Game) bunkhouse, where we were staying in town. Our collaborator Jenefer Bell, Arctic Area Research Biologist with ADF&G, has been so helpful and supportive throughout the planning of our coastal Arctic fieldwork this summer! Our plan over the next few days is to have a 3-day trip with Captain Adem Boeckmann and his large fishing vessel Anchor Point to transect south and collect measurements across a strong marine-coastal-estuarine gradient in Norton Sound and near the Yukon River Delta. Saturday looks like our one chance at (some) sunshine, so we plan to spend Friday steaming and collect the majority of data on Saturday.

Meanwhile, we've been enjoying the quaint but small town of Nome. At that time, Nome was one of Alaska's largest cities, with people flocking to strike it rich in the golden sands. We walked the beach along Norton Sound and admired a sprawling collection of old rusted machinery from Nome's "golden era". The team assembled the optics package that will be used over the next few days to collect profiles of optical parameters, including absorption and backscattering, critical for linking in-situ measurements to satellite imagery. The weather is slightly chilly, but not too bad! I haven't had to pull out my heavy winter coat yet.

- Kyle Turner

Sampling the mighty Yukon River during the spring freshet

https://www.arcticriverscarbon.org/blog/a-postcard-from-alana-menendez-at-the-yukon-river

https://www.arcticriverscarbon.org/blog/a-postcard-from-alana-menendez-at-the-yukon-river#comments

Uncategorized

Flying over the Lower Yukon River Delta Teddy, Theo, Kiera, Peter, Maria and Alana Training Kiera and Theo on the YSI/EXO2 Photo Credit: Maria Tzortziou This spring - and after two years of no measurements in the Yukon due to the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions - our team was finally able to visit again the Village [...]

<div style="height: 20px; We also trained two remarkable high school interns, Kiera and Theo, from the Lower Yukon School District. Keira and Theo will be collecting and filtering water samples from within the Yukon River Delta all summer, contributing a very important dataset on organic carbon and particulate loading from spring-freshet to fall. This dataset will help the development and validation of satellite ocean color algorithms for water quality, that will enhance our understanding of the changing Yukon’s past, present, and future.

We are excited to be doing research in the Yukon, again, and even more so, to be able to reconnect and work closely together with those who call it home!

- Maria Tzortziou (May 2022)
